Muslims in Oklahoma: A Rich History

Oklahoma’s Muslim community is more diverse and established than many realize. From the early Muslim immigrants who arrived in the early 20th century to the thriving communities in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman, Stillwater, and beyond, Muslims have been an integral part of Oklahoma’s fabric for generations.

Today, Oklahoma is home to tens of thousands of Muslims representing diverse backgrounds—from South Asian and Arab communities to African American Muslims and converts from all walks of life. Our state hosts numerous mosques, Islamic schools, and community centers that serve as hubs for worship, education, and fellowship.

The Muslim community in Oklahoma contributes significantly to our state’s economy, healthcare system, educational institutions, and civic life. Muslim doctors, engineers, educators, business owners, and students are woven into the very fabric of Oklahoma society.

Understanding Islam in Oklahoma

For those less familiar, Islam is one of the world’s major monotheistic faiths, sharing roots with Christianity and Judaism. Muslims believe in one God (Allah in Arabic) and follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as revealed in the Quran, Islam’s holy book.

The five pillars of Islam—declaration of faith, prayer, charity, fasting during Ramadan, and pilgrimage to Mecca—guide Muslim practice. But beyond these fundamentals, Islam emphasizes values that resonate deeply with Oklahoma culture: hospitality, family, education, hard work, and service to others.
